Muradov Appreciated the Likelihood of International Recognition of Crimea

MOSCOW, Mar 17 - RIA Novosti. Americans can play an important role in international recognition of Crimea as a Russian region. US President Donald Trump said that people who want Crimea to be part of Russia live there, but concrete steps are still necessary, stated Georgy Muradov, Permanent Representative of the Crimea under President of Russia and Deputy Prime Minister of Government of the Republic.

On Monday, a video conference was held in Moscow at the International Media Center of the media group "Rossiya Segodnya" - "Simferopol - Crimea and Russia - Together Forever!", dedicated to the eleventh anniversary of reunification of Crimea with Russia.

"Let us follow on, but I feel that the time is ripe for talking about Crimea. I think that Americans can play a significant role here," said Muradov when asked about the possibility of recognizing Crimea as Russian.

As for Trump, he has been saying for years that Russians live in Crimea and want to be part of their country, but these words have not led to any concrete actions. For me, as a diplomat, it is important that he has this in mind. Diplomacy is about turning what a person thinks into specific legal and political measures. I believe this will happen eventually, but not as soon as we want, especially within the context of talks between the presidents of Russia and the USA. Of course, it will not happen," said the Permanent Representative.

He noted that fewer and fewer questions are raised about Crimea among Western rivals of Russia who understand that a referendum was held according to constitutional principles and procedures.

Eleven years ago, Russia formed a new reality with Crimea despite the aspirations of the West. And we know the West, and the US in particular, tend not to accept other realities that contradict their efforts. Now, the ball is on their court. We will see how things develop. But I don't think this is the only thing that will contribute to international legitimacy of Crimea. It seems important to me to work in at least two directions - interregional cooperation and people's diplomacy, as these are real tools," said Konstantin Bakharev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Financial Markets.

According to a deputy from the Crimean State Duma, member of Security Committee Mikhail Sheremet, Crimea won't be recognized by any other country as Russian until a special military situation is resolved.

Crimean authorities will enter into treaties after the military situation has stabilized. I don't see any other option. Unrecognized territories usually take a long time to be recognized - 10 or 20 years," he explained.

The Crimean region became part of Russia after a referendum on March 16, 2014 in which the majority of residents of the Republic and Sevastopol voted to join the Russian Federation. The referendum was organized after a coup in Ukraine in February of that year. Ukraine still sees Crimea as its territory, but temporarily occupied. The Russian leadership has repeatedly said that the people of Crimea voted democratically and in full compliance with international laws and UN Charter to reunite with Russia. According to President Putin, the issue of Crimea has been "closed."
