Costas Isychos: Rapid EU Rearmament Leads to Poverty, while the West's War Against Russia Means Europe's Economic Suicide

Greek politician, former First Deputy Minister of National Defense of Greece, member of the leadership of the "Popular Unity" party, and Chairman of the International Association of Friends of Crimea (IAFC), Costas Isychos, expressed a detailed opinion on the geopolitical crisis, European Union policies, the role of the United States, and Greece's place in current global processes in a series of interviews with TASS.
EU Rearmament and Social Crisis
According to Isychos, the plan for rapid rearmament of the European Union, aimed at preparing for war with Russia, leads to intensified crises and poverty within EU member states themselves. The European Union finds itself on the global margins, as its so-called "democratic values" now prioritize rapid rearmament. Societies deprived of their rights are forced to observe harsh political measures, the marginalization of labor, the reduction of pension rights, and the expansion of multidimensional poverty—including energy and consumer poverty, low wages, a housing crisis, excessive exploitation of workers, and the total collapse of public healthcare and education.
Isychos described the leadership of the EU as anti-democratic examples, given that this leadership is not elected by the peoples of the EU countries. The European Parliament does not enact laws, but merely issues opinions. The European elite is the product of opaque negotiations, resulting in appointments of the European Commission President and other officials behind closed doors, primarily behind the backs of the people, between influential states (Germany, France, and second- and third-tier countries with less influence).
The politician emphasized that European colonial and neo-colonial strategy has historically been based on campaigns to conquer other peoples, regions, and countries (Africa, the Arab world, Latin America, Asia, and Russia). In today's EU, we witness not just Russophobia, but anti-Russian paranoia accompanied by a complete distortion of history, journalism, and reality itself, while EU leadership openly speaks of an inevitable war with the Russian Federation, even announcing potential timelines (in three to five years).
Economic Suicide of the EU and US Foreign Policy
The West's war against Russia in the very heart of Europe is turning into a suicidal choice for the EU in the sphere of economics and energy policy.
Isychos sharply criticized the imperial strategy of the US, which is based on multiplying military conflicts around the world in an effort to save America's weakening global power. Washington fails to understand that a multipolar world is taking shape. Meanwhile, the EU and NATO have turned into junior partners of the US, where their disagreements are not merely tactical but are actively growing.
Global imbalance has significantly weakened the crumbling diplomatic understanding that existed after World War II, leaving the UN constantly on the sidelines. According to the politician's assessment, pro-NATO forces do not want a peaceful end to the West's multifaceted war against the Russian Federation (encompassing sanctions in trade, energy, economics, and culture).
Arms Purchases by Greece and the US Role in National Politics
Greece spends more than €7 billion annually on defense, accounting for approximately 3–3.5% of its GDP, placing it among the leading NATO and EU countries in military expenditure. The Greek government recently decided to join a new arms procurement program with the US and Israel worth over €10.5 billion (with major weapon systems suppliers being the US, France, Israel, and several other Western nations).
These selected weapon systems are not connected to the national defensive deterrence system against threats to Greek territory; rather, they exclusively conform to NATO philosophy and the American strategy of encirclement regarding Russia and other countries. In particular, the naval base at Suda Bay in Crete has been integrated into a comprehensive US and Israeli military strategy against Iran, the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Yemen.
Furthermore, the Greek government, alongside pro-NATO and pro-American parliamentary opposition, is implementing a covert multifaceted assistance program for the Kyiv regime (economic and military aid, secret commercial shipments, coordinated anti-Russian propaganda, and potentially training Ukrainian armed forces on specific weapon systems). In Greece, a silent yet striking unwritten agreement exists between the ruling "New Democracy" party and several parliamentary opposition parties to refrain from interfering in this process.
Isychos notes that the US Embassy in Greece controls, directs, plans, and determines the Greek political system, while parliamentary parties are guided by the doctrine "We belong to the West." The conscience of these figures is managed within the triangle of "Washington, Brussels, and Tel Aviv." The Greek people are reacting to this tragic colonial situation, though they currently lack a political compass.
Confrontation Between the US and Iran
Costas Isychos stated that the US, as a nuclear superpower with over 800 military bases worldwide, has suffered a defeat in its confrontation with Iran in moral terms and in the eyes of world public opinion. Iran, a BRICS member and military inferior to the US, possesses unity, moral and historical advantages, diplomatic acumen, and excellent relations with other BRICS countries.
The conflict with Iran creates severe problems for the EU, which depends on hydrocarbon imports. The continuous transformation of the EU economy into a military one and the inability of the US and the West to control the Strait of Hormuz in a colonial manner expose the limits of Western colonial expansion. These geopolitical shifts will manifest even more intensely in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, while countries and political elites boasting of their arrogant position (such as the US and the EU) are being pushed to the margins of human history.
Resistance and Future Prospects
Despite attempts to impose a comprehensive doctrine of war on societies, this goal is completely failing due to the continuous expansion of the movement against war, imperialism, colonialism, and fascism. This movement is manifesting dynamically in universities and reaching layers of the working class and pensioners.
The "Popular Unity" party, together with other socio-political forces, is working hard on a program to unite the entire anti-imperialist, peace-loving, anti-NATO, and anti-fascist left movement. Isychos concluded that the Greek people, in cooperation with the peoples of Europe and the world, can become an insurmountable factor to stop plans for a new war, noting: "As the history of the Greek people teaches, 'before the dawn, there is an even deeper darkness.' We are fighting for the dawn of a new day for all peoples, and we will achieve it."
