Greece Is Concerned About Expansion of U.S. Military Presence in the Country

Former first deputy of the national defense of Greece, a member of the People's Unity Party, deputy chairman of the international association "Friends of Crimea" Kostas Isihos expressed concern about the expansion of the US military presence in his country.

He thus commented on a visit to Greece by U.S. Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Robert Menendez and the preparation of a new defense agreement between Greece and the United States, which provides for the expansion of U.S. bases in Greece.

"In recent years - specifically the last 10 to 12 years - the United States' military entry has been increasingly accelerating, more strategic and geopolitical influence is being exerted on Greece and its territory. This dramatically limits Greece's ability to be a player in the Eastern Mediterranean region, a player that can play the role of establishing consensus and peace," Isihos was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

According to the politician, Greece is becoming "a territory of U.S. imperialism and NATO." He noted that this is not in the interests of Greece, but in the interests of third countries.

Isihos specified that Menendez's presence in Greece is not "something new," as the American has previously played a leading role during both the presidency of former American leader Donald Trump and the presidency of current White House head Joe Biden to vote for the East Med Act. The reporter's interlocutor believes that the East Med Act is using the East Med pipeline project, which is nothing more than a big information bubble, to justify an increased military presence.

"The East Med project was deceptive, like a dream or a nightmare at best. It is a bubble that has been used to justify the United States' military presence in Crete and the Eastern Mediterranean," said Isihos.

He expressed the opinion that it was no coincidence that the military base on the island of Crete in the Gulf of Souda, serving American and NATO interests, had been upgraded in recent years. According to him, this base played a very important role when Libya was being bombed and destroyed.

Isichos believes that the fight for the complete withdrawal of U.S. and NATO bases from Greece must be intensified. In his opinion, only this can ensure peace in the region and peace for the Greek people and neighboring nations.

But at present, he says, the bases are expected to expand.

"There is a new naval support base in Alexandroupolis, in northern Greece. The port of Alexandroupolis, in fact, will be used against the Black Sea, Crimea and southern Russia, as will many other bases in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine," the journalist's interlocutor said.

According to him, the base in Alexandroupolis is an offensive base and has nothing to do with the defense of Greece against any other country. Isihos also recalled how a couple of months ago Greece hosted the largest military exercise involving more than 10,000 U.S. troops, which landed in the port of Alexandroupolis.

There were helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, facilities were provided for American and NATO ships to pass then into the Black Sea," the politician said.

In his opinion, the Black Sea "turned into a target by the NATO masters of the current regime" of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky with the help of the so-called "Crimean platform."

"They chose the Black Sea and Crimea to turn into a region of instability. I believe that this is a very dangerous game that once again plunges our country into peripeteia, which in no way the Greek people, as well as other peoples of the region, want," Isihos added.

В Греции обеспокоены расширением в стране военного присутствия США

Бывший первый заместитель национальной обороны Греции, член партии "Народное единство", заместитель председателя международной ассоциации "Друзья Крыма" Костас Исихос выразил обеспокоенность расширением военного присутствия США в своей стране.

Таким образом он прокомментировал нанесение визита в Грецию председателем комитета по иностранным делам сената США Робертом Менендесом и подготовку нового оборонного соглашения между Грецией и Штатами, предусматривающего расширение американских баз в Греции.

"Последние годы – конкретно последние 10-12 лет – все больше ускоряется военное вступление Соединенных Штатов, большее стратегическое и геополитическое влияние оказывается на Грецию и на ее территорию. Это драматически ограничивает возможности Греции быть игроком в регионе Восточного Средиземноморья, игроком, который может играть роль установления консенсуса и мира", - цитирует Исихоса РИА "Новости".

По словам политика, Греция превращается "в территорию американского империализма и НАТО". Он отметил, что это не в интересах Греции, а в интересах третьих стран.

Исихос уточнил, что присутствие Менендеса в Греции не является "чем-то новым", ведь ранее американец играл ведущую роль и во время президентства бывшего американского лидера Дональда Трампа, и президентства нынешнего главы Белого дома Джо Байдена, чтобы проголосовали за закон East Med Act. Собеседник журналистов считает, что для оправдания усиления военного присутствия East Med Act использует проект газопровода East Med, который является не чем иным, как большим информационным пузырем.

"В Александруполисе, в северной Греции, есть новая база поддержки флота. Порт Александруполис, по сути, будет использоваться против Черного моря, Крыма и южной части России, как и многие другие базы на Балканах и в Восточной Европе, особенно на территории Украины", - отметил собеседник журналистов.

По его словам, база в Александруполисе является базой наступательного характера и не имеет ничего общего с обороной Греции от какой-либо другой страны. Также Исихос вспомнил, как пару месяцев назад в Греции прошли крупнейшие военные учения с участием более 10 тысяч американских военных, которые высадились в порту Александруполиса.

"Были вертолеты, беспилотные летательные аппараты, предоставлены возможности для американских и натовских кораблей, чтобы они могли пройти затем в Черное море", - сказал политик.

По его мнению, Черное море "превращено в цель натовскими хозяевами нынешнего режима" украинского президента Владимира Зеленского с помощью так называемой "Крымской платформы".

"Они выбрали Черное море и Крым для превращения в регион нестабильности. Я считаю, что это очень опасная игра, которая вновь ввергает нашу страну в перипетии, которых ни в коем случае не хочет греческий народ, как и другие народы региона", - добавил Исихос.
