Greece explained why it is important to support Russian proposals on NATO

Former Deputy Minister of Defense of Greece Isichos: Russia's proposals on NATO are important for the world

ATHENS, 18 Dec - RIA Novosti. Russia 's proposals for mutual security guarantees in Europe with NATO are very important for peace in Europe, but they are incompatible with the current NATO policy, and the alliance is unlikely to accept them, the former First Deputy Minister of National Defense of Greece , a member of the Popular Unity party , told RIA Novosti "(" Laiki enotita "), Deputy Chairman of the International Association" Friends of Crimea " Kostas Isichos .

On the eve of Russia, Russia published draft treaties with the United States and NATO, which include, in particular, provisions on mutual guarantees of security in Europe, on the non-deployment of intermediate and shorter-range missiles in each other's reach and refusal from further NATO expansion to the east, including for account of the former republics of the USSR .

SAFETY GUARANTEES

"Russia's proposals for a new agreement on security measures for Russia and the NATO states, especially for the European continent, will to a very large extent ensure the continuation of peace. The nine articles in the draft agreement are a proposal of exceptional importance and very timely. Because there is nothing at the moment that binds NATO and Russia in a new arms race, both conventional and nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction, " Isichos said.

According to him, now there is not even the security that was in the years of cold water.

"Previous agreements, at least during the Cold War years, gave relative, not to say absolute, but relative security. Today there is no security. And NATO policy and NATO strategy are constantly evolving, especially in Eastern Europe . I am not talking only about the Baltic states , Poland , Romania , Hungary , but also about Greece with the deployment of new American bases, mainly in the Court and in Alexandroupolis, aimed at the Black Sea, "the politician said.

Isichos believes that the Russian attempt to ensure security concerns all the peoples of Europe, not only the European Union , but also other countries, and Russia, and the Russian proposals should be submitted for discussion in parliaments.

“It is extremely important for the entire European continent to discuss this proposal. NATO members should not only discuss it. parliaments of NATO member states. So that this proposal would receive an assessment and response from societies, from citizens of Europe. So that it would not be a proposal only for the top, for the political leadership of NATO countries, "said Isichos.

THE REVIVAL OF NEONAZISM

According to him, Russia's proposal to harmonize the last resolution introduced by Russia at the General Assembly of the United Nations , in the fight against Nazism and neo-Nazism.

"It has been introduced for many years. The ideas of neo-Nazism, unfortunately, are spreading throughout the planet, and especially in Europe," said Isychos.

The expert explained why the United States will not sign a security assurance treaty

As an example, he cited the "ultra-right neo-Nazi concepts" of the Ukrainian government and the Baltic countries, as well as discrimination against minorities in the Baltic countries and Ukraine after 2014.

“Unfortunately, this proposal (on the fight against Nazism) was not adopted unanimously. There were two countries that voted against the proposal at the UN, the United States and Ukraine. I don’t think the vote of these two countries against was a political accident. and diplomatic. This is a deliberate policy and strategy, which, unfortunately, distorts the historical facts of World War II. And is a continuation of the strategy of equating Nazism, communism and socialism. This is what they have been doing for many years in the European Union, in Washington , in Brussels , but and in many EU countries, "said Isichos.

According to him, two countries were against, and about 50 countries abstained, among them again all the countries of the European Union. He connects this with the influence of the military-industrial complex, transnational corporations that have embarked on a course for armament.

Isichos believes that Russia's proposal for a new agreement on the limitation and control of nuclear weapons on the European continent and weapons of mass destruction, as well as the last vote in the UN, provides an opportunity for the people of Europe to "throw the ideas of Nazism, fascism, war, discrimination beyond their borders and not leave these ideas of opportunity to enter the stage. "

RETURN TO THE SITUATION BEFORE NATO EXPANSION

The former First Deputy Minister of Defense of Greece highlighted in the draft agreement Article 4 on the return of armed forces and weapons to the situation of 1997 before NATO expansion and Article 7 on NATO's refusal to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia .

“I think that Article 4 and Article 7 of these proposed agreements would provide a very large return to the situation of 1997. When there was a commitment by Washington and NATO countries not to expand the alliance eastward, as well as into the Caucasus and Central Asia. Unfortunately, however, this obligation was violated. And it was violated 100%, not in part, "the politician said.

The Nordic and Baltic countries did not accept Russia's NATO proposal

According to him, the Baltic countries, Poland, Bulgaria , Romania, Hungary, Greece are deploying new bases and new forces, new missile systems, including short- and medium-range missiles on the borders of the Russian Federation.

“This not only violates the defense and military status quo of the two regions, that is, Russia and Western Europe and NATO, but it leads us from the current situation to an even more dangerous point. This is essentially a military aggressive encirclement of today's Russian Federation, on its borders with NATO. in Europe, but also in the Caucasus and Asia, " Isichos said.

In his opinion, now there is a great opportunity for diplomacy to win and not to let the war win.

“It is very important that Articles 4 and 7 are perceived as the heart of the content of the proposed agreement, because they provide to a very large extent a zero-base launch, I would say, from 1997, of new modernized disarmament proposals. The draft agreement is just the beginning. may have a long continuation if NATO says yes. If no, we will return not only to 1997. Unfortunately, we will return to the 1930s, "the politician said.

"If a new attempt at armament in the heart of Europe is again associated with the growth of neo-Nazi ideas, ideas of discrimination against religious, social, national minorities, with anti-Russian hysteria, to which, unfortunately, enough NATO leaders are committed. This will be a nightmare for humanity, and this must be stopped." - said Isichos.

He reiterated that the Russian proposal should be discussed not only at the highest level.

"Peace movements must once again become large, massive and effective in order to influence so many governments in Europe and NATO members. If the peoples remain indifferent to this proposal, then it will not have much success. If the peoples accept it, then the success of the new world , a new movement for a peaceful resolution of problems in Europe can start again and there will be a process of hope for all, " Isichos said.

NATO GLOBALIZATION

When asked whether these proposals are acceptable to NATO, the politician answered negatively.

"I believe that these proposals are incompatible with today's NATO policy. Because NATO is globalizing, NATO is expanding outside of Europe," Isichos said.

As an example, he cited the participation of the government of Colombia in the "Crimean Platform" in Kiev .

"Colombia received the status of NATO's partner - not a full member, but a partner. If NATO through the partnership process makes full members of the countries of another continent - Latin America , Africa , Asia , the rest of the world, then NATO's globalization will mean the globalization of the dangers of a new war. If it is nuclear, life will disappear from this planet. This is not science fiction, this is combined with the modern strategy that NATO is pursuing today, "he said.

"Russia's proposal means that NATO must make a 180-degree turn in its current policy of expansion and globalization in all spheres of influence and activity," concluded Isichos.
